West Columbia, South Carolina

Combining the natural beauty of the rivers and its small town feel, West Columbia is a community located on the banks of the Congaree and Saluda Rivers in the eastern portion of Lexington County. The tree-lined streets, quaint shops, and historic areas standing side-by-side with new development add to the charm and livability of West Columbia.

The convenience of being just across the river from Columbia, the capital city of SC, with Interstate highways I-20, I-26 and I-77 all surrounding the town, make West Columbia a very desirable location, both for industry and homes.

Columbia Metropolitan Airport, which serves Columbia, is located here. The National Weather Service radar station and Weather Forecast Office, which serves eighteen counties in South Carolina and five counties in Georgia, are also located at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport in West Columbia. In addition, Midlands Technical College operates their Airport Campus nearby.

Cayce and West Columbia are neighboring communities, both east of Lexington and just across the river from Columbia. While they have much in common each has its own distinct style and personality.

West Columbia SC History

First chartered as a town in 1894 under the name Brookland, because of the many clear water brooks in the region. Since there was already a town named Brookland, the United States Postal Service designated the area "New Brookland". In 1936, the charter was changed to West Columbia. There are still a number of schools, churches and other enterprises in town carrying the Brookland name.

The town originated mainly as a source of housing for mill employees. The original plans for construction of the Columbia Mills had designated the western shore of the Congaree as its location. When it was ultimately located on the eastern shore, the world's first electrically driven textile mill was situated on one shore of the Congaree and the working population on the other. At first ferry boats were used to transport the workers to their job site but as the working population increased and the demand of more people to visit Columbia rose, the Guignard family built the first bridge across the Congaree River.

Many of the homes and buildings located on Meeting and State Streets today were built in the early 1900’s, after a fire engulfed the Brookland community in 1905, destroying numerous homes and other buildings.
