Shandon in Columbia, South Carolina

Shandon began as a suburban town on the southeast boundaries of Columbia in 1891. The name Shandon was chosen to honor the Rev. Peter J. Shand as well as the beautiful Scottish town famed in the poem “The Hills of Shandon.” Incorporated as a town on March 8, 1904, it grew rapidly. On June 13, 1913 the town was incorporated into the city of Columbia.

Known for the beautiful dogwoods and azaleas that make it a tourist attraction each Spring, the Shandon neighborhood is valued for its proximity to downtown, Five Points and the University of South Carolina.

With diverse shopping and dining available both in Five Points as well as along Devine Street, the area is home to a diverse population of all ages, families and singles.
