Lugoff/Elgin, South Carolina

The Lugoff/Elgin communities are situated on the eastern edge of the Columbia, SC metropolitan area, close to Camden, SC. Located in Kershaw County, in an area of the state designated by the tourism industry as The Olde English District. The name refers to the region's early settlement by the English in the mid-1770's and to the Revolutionary War battles fought here.

Lugoff was named for a Russian, Count Lugoff, who tradition says brought railroad workers to the area. The old train station stands on Ward Road as a testament to the community’s origin as a stop on the Seaboard Railroad.

Elgin is the third name for the other town in this community. As early as 1832, Mr. Jeffers operated the post office out of his home, so the town was known as Jeffers. In the 1840s, the Seaboard Railroad came through the community and soon the town's name changed to Blaney to honor an executive of the railroad company. Finally, the town became Elgin in the 1960s when the Elgin Watch Company opened a plant and for a time, employed over 240 people in the area.
