Irmo, South Carolina

Located on the shores of Lake Murray and only ten miles from Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, Irmo, SC has grown from a sleepy little railroad stop to a small suburban crossroads to one of the county's most sought after places to live.

Chartered on Christmas Eve, 1890 in response to the opening of the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad, Irmo’s name came from combining the names of Captain C.J. Iredell and Henry Moseley, two railroad company men.

In the 1930s, the largest earthen dam in the world (at that time) was built across the nearby Saluda River, forming Lake Murray. The dam, along with the construction of I-26 adjacent to Irmo in the late 1950's, triggered the rapid growth of the greater Irmo area.

Irmo is home to the annual Okra Strut, one of the state’s premiere festivals held each Fall. Offering arts and crafts, delicious and decadent food, a street dance, parade, and a wide range of performers, the Okra Strut offers something for everyone from toddlers to senior citizens.

Despite the town's growth, Irmo does not have an actual downtown area. Rather, it offers a variety of strip centers and shopping plazas, as well as the assortment of retail stores located in Columbiana Center and all of the vast array of shops, restaurants, movie theatres and offices situated on both sides of Harbison Boulevard.
